Duschanek, János Mysterious villa
Description
The works of János Duschanek are surrealistic paintings with special symbolism, in which figural scenes of special visions come to life. The figures of his unique pictorial world, dressed in renaissance costumes, swirl and rotate like the bizarre life pictures in the Netherlands. His clownish, grotesque figures also appear in scenes in space and time that do not match.
In the foreground of his oil painting is a scene evoking a cavalcade of fairgrounds. Cheerful figures cool under a tarpaulin-covered chariot: a middle-aged man besieges the lady of his heart, blowing the Scottish bagpipe in front of them. A horse struggling farther away from the chariot is being curbed by its owners, and regardless of the dramatic moment, a young woman is tying her headband. In the lower left corner of the picture, a figure in a pink dress swings, with a woman sitting back to back in a chest stretching her mirror. Behind the bustling people, the Mediterranean facade of a crumbling, ancient villa darkens. Under the blue sky of the background stretches the azure horizon of the sea.
The peculiar pictorial world of the Mysterious Villa evokes the painting of Giorgio de Chirico, an Italian surrealist artist, but János Duschanek's carefully designed canvas also reminds us of the pictorial solutions known from the works of Italian and Dutch Renaissance masters. Condensed into a composition, we see logically unrelated elements and objects, which gives the image a special atmosphere. The color scheme (blue-gray-pink), strong contrasts, and exaggerated proportions of Duschan’s work enhance his sense of unreality.
János Duschanek is a unique color spot in Hungarian painting. He painted the surreal world in his painting The Mysterious Villa with the traditional oil technique in a classic way.
