The artwork is one of the 20 pages series called “Sankai mitate zumo”. This one is Kazusa, Kano mountain (today called the Chiba region). The title of the series is visible in the upper right as a fan shaped field (the so called „gunbai uchiwa”-fighter fan) on the right side of the fan. The name of each location on the pages is signed on the left side of the fan. The fan itself is a Sumo symbol referring to the competition between the mountains and the seelandscapes. On the work we do see a beautiful staircase, that leads to a sintó sanctuary. In the lower right you see the signature of the artist: Hiroshige-ga. Above the signature we see a date and time stamp: the Year of the Horse 7th (moon) month (1858).
This Series is one of Hiroshige's last and latest artwork, because he died in fall in 1858. Near the lower edge of the artwork we see the publisher's seal: Yamadaya Shojiro, Nakabashi.
The complete series is preserved in the Paris Bibliothéque Nationale.
