Borsos Mikós (1906-1990) | Timeless harmony | 120. anniversary exhbition
2026. May 02. - May 31.
The Munkácsy - and Kossuth price awarded sculptor Borsos Miklós (1906 - 1990) was born in Sibiu in 1906. He originally trained as a goldsmith, then turned to sculpture as a self-taught artist. His artistic development was strongly influenced by classical education, study trips to Italy, and a humanist outlook. In the period between the two World Wars, he emerged with remarkable small-scale sculptures, and later became one of the defining figures of modern Hungarian sculpture.
In his work, figuration always carried inner meaning: the human figure became a symbol of timelessness, tranquility, and proportion. His finely shaped female heads, maternity sculptures, and motifs of birds and the sun demonstrate a mastery of poetic condensation. Alongside his public works, he also created a significant amount of medal art and graphic works, which are connected to his sculptures through the same lyrical discipline and quiet spirituality. Many of his works can be found in the Hungarian National Gallery; a permanent exhibition of his is located in the Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History; and a Miklós Borsos Memorial Apartment can also be visited in Buda Castle.
The commemorative chamber sales exhibition, organized on the occasion of the artist’s 120th birth anniversary and assembled from various private collection, aims to present a cross-section of his oeuvre through rarely seen works. In addition to the rarest museum level marble sculptures, several important copper reliefs and exceptionally rare ink drawings will be displayed, as well as an early painting made in Florence in 1929 that has never been exhibited before. These works reveal Borsos’s sensitive linework and conceptual conciseness. Placing sculptures and graphics side by side highlights the timeless harmony that is the defining characteristic of his art.
With this exhibition, Koller Galéria also wishes to pay tribute to the close friendship between the artist and the gallery’s founder, Koller György (1923-1996), who passed away exactly 30 years ago this year and played a key role in presenting and promoting Borsos Miklós’s works both in Hungary and internationally.
