Description
In this finely balanced cityscape, Gyula Hary demonstrates his mastery of light, perspective, and atmosphere. The viewer’s gaze is led along a narrow Venetian canal spanned by a small red-brick bridge, where a gondola glides quietly through the water, steered by its oarsman. The façades of the surrounding palazzi glow warmly in the afternoon light, creating a tranquil yet vivid impression.
Hary’s subtle interplay between painterly atmosphere and architectural precision reveals his mature style. Rooted in the European late-Impressionist tradition, the artist merges realism with a refined sensitivity to tone and illumination. Sunlight flickers across the stucco walls, reflects in the water, and unites the composition in a serene harmony of form and color.
The sign Libreria Toniolo on the left adds a touch of topographical authenticity, while the overall composition portrays Venice not as a spectacle but as a place of quiet, enduring beauty.
This work stands as an excellent example of Hary Gyula’s gift for infusing urban landscapes with poetic stillness and classical balance.
