Biography
Oszkár Glatz naturalist painter was born in 1872 in Budapest. In 1890 he studied as the pupil of Simon Hollósy in Munich, than he was following his studies at the Julian Academy in Paris. In 1896 he finally joined Simon Hollósy circle of friends. These painters success on the Millennium painter’s exhibitions inspired him. With great enthusiasm helped him masters to organize and evolved the Art Colony of “Nagybánya”. In 1897 he was a great hit at the exhibition of “Nagybánya” in Budapest, he was praised by the older masters, even the critics, the audience is rewarded him, he got a lot of portrait orders in that time. Originally the “Night on the alp” titled picture was bought by the Museum of Miskolc, today the Hungarian National Gallery keeps it.
He illustrated the peasants live in Nagybánya in cheerful atmosphere plein air pictures; from 1897 he had been taken part on exhibitions. After 1900 in Bujáki (Nógrád County) he developed his naturalistic style. The peasant types he portrayed in idyllic pictures, he used the folk costumes motives outwardly. He is an important representative of the “Nagybánya” post-impressionist style. His strength is the shape representation, the depiction of movement, the plein air painting, the landscape and the human intimate unity portrayal, and the perpetuation of the folk customs.
