Description

We see two interwoven zebras on Victor Vasarely’s artwork.
The artist plays a visual game with us. The black and white zebra pair now emerge from a kind of colorful chessboard background. “The color is a form and the form is a color.”-says Vasarely. And it is true. The picture of his animal decoration gives visual stimulus and cuts a spatial dash.
Vasarely is the representative of artistic tendency of op-art. He is adept in optical art experience. There are simple geometrical forms on the “Zebras on chessboard” artwork: the strict order of vivid, bright colored squares creates the illusion of depth, movement and vibration.
He was interested in the optical effects at the beginning of his career already. He created the basics type of zebras in 1938. Later he got back again and again to this basics motive and he made more version of them (Zebras -1939, Zebras - 1980), so it became his trademark.
With his mimeographed artworks he produced a new visual language which can be understandable for everyone. His artworks re-interpret the definition of the picture. He thinks “The art will be compelled to became treasure of public.”
This artwork belongs to his most well-known artworks. It has the abstract and op-art style sign.
This artwork is the prominent piece from the “pope of op-art” Vasarely and it is a confection for the modern and demanding collectors.
