Biography

Csergezán Pál – Biography and Artistic Career

Csergezán Pál was born on June 28, 1924, in Záhony, Hungary. At the age of fifteen, he began studying architecture at the Budapest School of Applied Arts, where he trained for three years. Towards the end of World War II, he was sent to the front, and during his time as a prisoner of war he became acquainted with Russian landscape painting. He was released in 1948.

In 1953 he graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in graphic arts, where he studied under Sándor Ék. He worked as a graphic artist and illustrator. One of the central themes of his work was hunting, while the depiction of horses also became a defining element of his artistic production.

In addition to painting, he produced printed graphics, slide films, and book illustrations. He became particularly known for his nature depictions and his etchings featuring horses and wildlife, which represent an important contribution to Hungarian nature painting.

He participated in numerous national exhibitions in Hungary, but received his first major recognition abroad. He lived and worked in Germany for a period and later also worked at the court of the Shah of Iran.

He spent the final years of his life in Telki, where he was also buried. After his death, several memorial sites and monuments were established in his honor.
